What Are Myo-Inositol and D-Chiro-Inositol?
Myo-inositol (MI) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI) are naturally occurring, vitamin-like compounds involved in how your body processes insulin and regulates hormone signaling in the ovaries. In women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), insulin signaling is often disrupted, which can contribute to irregular cycles, elevated androgen levels, and difficulty with weight management.
Researchers have found that a healthy ovary naturally maintains MI and DCI in roughly a 40:1 ratio. This observation led to the development of combination supplements designed to mirror that ratio, with the goal of supporting the body's natural insulin and hormone regulation.
What Does the Research Show?
Myo-inositol is one of the more well-studied supplements for PCOS, with a number of clinical trials evaluating its effects. Reported areas of benefit include:
- Supporting more regular menstrual cycles and ovulation in some patients
- Improving insulin sensitivity, which may help reduce some of the downstream hormone imbalances associated with PCOS
- Modest improvements in androgen-related symptoms such as acne or excess hair growth
- Complementing weight management efforts — though it is not a weight-loss treatment on its own
As with any supplement, individual results vary, and myo-inositol should be viewed as a complement to — not a replacement for — the treatment plan recommended by your OB/GYN or endocrinologist.
What to Expect
Patients using a 40:1 MI:DCI combination often take it twice daily with food. Because PCOS symptoms develop over months to years, most people don't notice meaningful changes right away. Many patients report improvements in cycle regularity over several weeks to months of consistent use, with changes in skin, hair, or weight often taking longer to become noticeable. Consistency matters more than any single dose.
Safety & Side Effects
Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol are generally well tolerated. Some patients report mild bloating, gas, stomach upset, or headache, which can often be reduced by taking the supplement with food.
Is It Right for You?
If you've been diagnosed with PCOS, talk to your provider about whether a compounded MI:DCI formulation makes sense as part of your overall plan. Our pharmacists are happy to work with you and your provider to prepare a formulation suited to your needs.
